A new fence

Bulk excavation

The old road fence consisted of posts, many fire damaged and rotted at the base, with three strands of barbed wire. Worse was the vegetation growing along and through the fence that had not been touched for years. Here we have cut down most of the shrubs and cleared the dead wood. Next we detached the old wire, removed the posts, pulled the wire out of the remaining vegetation and rolled it up. Finally we slashed the remaining vegetation, which in places was a wild ride through large tussocks.

When our fencing contractor, Graham, arrived, he stretched a single line for the new fence. He said we would get a much better result if we cleared to the ground under the line. This created nearly three days of hard work while we used a mattock to clear vegetation and roots along 750m of line and raked away the debris. We just managed to keep ahead of the new fence construction, see the white truck in the background.

Lanscape plan

Wayne and Graham are finishing the fence by attaching spacers with a tap from a sledge hammer and seven pops from the nail gun for each. There are over 500 spacers to fix along the road and several hundred more on our neighbour's boundary.

Several weeks later, we had chance to rake up all the slash debris, smooth out lumps and bumps, clear a path for the slasher inside the fence and slash again. We now have a fence which is cleared around that we can manage more easily in future, and it will provide a fire break if necessary. Phew!
