Birds

Typical of small bush blocks, large and noisy birds have taken over the Rubicon Sanctuary. The native noisy miners are a special problem as they tend to chase away many smaller species and probably don't really belong at all. However, we do have some special birds as regulars, including flocks of up to 6 Tasmanian swamp quail most days and a pair of Japanese snipe over the summer. Our friend Pete looks after naughty raptors, for example those that prefer domestic chooks to their wild prey. This female white-phase grey goshawk was trapped in a chook pen and brought to our property for banding and release. The noisy miners were not impressed when the goshawk took to the air; we hope they move on permanently.
