Sarah Lloyd, Dr Genevieve Gates and Dr David Ratkowsky have all inspired our interest in fungi and helped us with identification.
Since 2011 we have observed, photographed, and made field notes about fungi each year, particularly in May and June.
We have drawn and described over 170 fungi and photographed more than two hundred possibly different species, which we have compiled into a personal field guide on our iPad. This all remains work-in-progress as we gradually improve our familiarity with each species, our skills with the microscope, and identification resources and skills.
After we have collected and described fungi, we dry them in a food dryer, freeze them for a week to kill microorganisms and then store them in labelled clip-lock bags. We plan to lodge them at the Melbourne Herbarium where they will become part of an on-going scientific collection.
